Read an Excerpt of The Nephilim’s Fate

Nephilim's fate My heart stopped for a moment before resuming its work at double speed. I gulped. Now was the time for the truth. Seraphina stood up and walked to her desk; when she turned back, she held a photo in her hand. My heart was beating frantically as Seraphina held out the picture. I nearly didn’t take it. I suddenly wanted to live in ignorance, yet my body reacted before I could decide and took the photo. I looked at a woman who resembled me a great deal. She also had dark hair and green eyes, her nose was a bit longer than mine, and her lips were thinner. However, it was clear that she was my kin.

“Her name was Keira Shepard. Your father is still unknown; the coven thinks he was a human and unimportant to her. She never told anybody about him.”

Keira Shepard. A beautiful name that fitted her. I wanted to know everything about her, right now. “What do you know of her? Is her family an old witch family? Did she leave anything behind?”

“She was from an old family. To our knowledge, it had died with her until now. Her belongings went to the coven after her mother—your grandmother—died ten years ago. Her file states she could glimpse into the future. She was much into the second sight. If you want to, I can ask for the whole file, including the documentation about her going missing.”

“That would be splendid. Thank you.” I tried to say more, but my thoughts were spinning. I had the name and face of my birth mother and a thousand questions.

Author Interview with Eliza Hampstead

What inspired you to come up with the idea for your book?

The inspiration for The Nephilim’s Fate came from a mix of influences, including the Shadowhunters series, my D&D campaign, and a desire to create more mature characters with complex relationships. I had been reading a lot of spicy fantasy romances and found myself wanting something different—more intense character dynamics and deeper world-building.I specifically envisioned a forbidden love between a Nephilim and a witch, a concept that emerged from my contemplation: What if their love was forbidden by ancient laws? And why is was forbidden a long time ago? From there, the story and world grew, with Alissia and Nate at its centre.

Do you have a favorite scene? If so, what was it?

Yes, my favourite scene is actually the one that inspired the entire book—when Alissia and Nate first meet. It’s filled with intense tension and an instant connection between them, but the forbidden nature of their relationship complicates everything. There’s a moment where they want to be close, but circumstances—mainly the ancient laws and their own identities—keep them apart. This was the spark that made me want to explore their story further. The chemistry between them in this scene is so powerful and charged, and it sets the tone for everything that follows.

Any challenges in writing this book?

Since The Nephilim’s Fate was my first book, there were definitely a lot of challenges! I had to learn how to create enough conflict to keep the story engaging, while also ensuring that the characters experienced genuine growth and development. Finding the right balance between action and emotional depth took some trial and error. On top of that, I had to refine my writing style, especially cutting out filler words like “but” or “very,” which I used far too often in the early drafts. Writing this book was a massive learning experience, and it taught me so much about crafting a compelling story from start to finish.

How would you describe a perfect hero?

To me, the perfect hero isn’t someone who’s flawless or invincible, but someone who’s willing to grow, change, and fight for what they believe in. A hero should be resilient, but also vulnerable. They need to face real struggles—whether those are internal battles or external conflicts—and have the strength to overcome them. They’re motivated by love, loyalty, or a strong moral code, but they’re also willing to admit when they’ve made mistakes. For example, Nate, the hero of The Nephilim’s Fate, isn’t just a powerful Nephilim—he has his own personal demons and flaws. What makes him heroic is his determination to do what’s right, even when it’s difficult, and his willingness to face his past.

What do you love most about writing?

What I love most about writing is the freedom it gives me to create new worlds and explore complex characters. There’s something magical about being able to build an entire universe from scratch, layering in mythology, magic, and intricate relationships. I also love the way writing allows me to delve into human emotions and motivations—especially in the fantasy romance genre, where intense emotions like love, fear, and desire can drive the story. And, of course, there’s nothing quite like the moment when the characters come to life on the page and surprise me by taking the story in directions I hadn’t expected!

Do you have a favorite writing environment?

My favourite place to write is somewhere quiet and free from distractions, usually at my desk. I prefer writing in a comfortable, familiar space where I can fully immerse myself in the world I’m building.

How do you go about choosing the names for your characters?

Naming characters is probably one of the hardest parts of writing for me! For the Nephilim, it was a bit easier because they have angelic names, so I researched various angel names and picked the ones that resonated most with the characters I was creating. But for the other characters, especially the witches or humans, it took me days or even weeks to settle on the perfect name. I often search through name databases and try different combinations, especially for surnames. I also make sure to Google the names to ensure they aren’t too common or already associated with real people. If they exist in real life, I won’t choose them!

Do you have a favorite genre you like to read (other than the ones you write in)?

I love reading textbooks on various topics, such as climate change and social issues. Currently, I’m diving into books about medieval England, exploring life in castles and similar themes, as part of my research for an upcoming time-travel romance.
