Description of Scales and Stingers
Thia Bransdottir is shunned for being half Fallen, a race feared by many. She tries to disguise her lineage, but her lilac eyes make it impossible. When her Father is killed, she is taken to the cloister to be a servant of her faith. Jinaari Althir is sworn to protect Thia from the disgraced half of her heritage. Under his holy vows, he must keep others from killing her for their prejudice and using her for her power. He must succeed, there is no room for failure. Trust for someone like Thia is difficult.
Jinaari may say he is there to protect her, but can he truly do his best when he knows she is of the Fallen? Will Thia stay safe in order to fulfill her purpose or is she fated to die for her origins?

Placing the waterskin on the table, she carefully wrapped her box in its coverings. “Who’d you steal the box from?”
She stared at him. “No one. My father made it for me.”
He snorted. “You expect me to believe that? I know the work. My mother had one she prized.” She started to open her mouth and stopped as he raised his hand. “I know it’s not that one. The acorns aren’t in the same place. Still, I know the craftsman was human. There’s no way you’re related.”
“My father’s name was Bran, and he was human. He raised me on the surface. My mother was Fallen, yes, but I don’t even know her name.” She finished wrapping the box and slid it into the belt pouch. Removing her tunic, she picked up the chain shirt. “I don’t know what happened to your family, Alesso. I only know what happened to mine. He was the only family I had, and Drogon turned our village against me. Against him. The last time I saw my father, he was lying dead across the threshold of our home after the looters set it on fire.” She let the weight settle on her shoulders, then reached for the tunic. “I know you don’t like me. The feeling’s mutual. But you’re the one who asked me to accept you as my Champion.”
“You didn’t have to accept, witch,” he growled at her.
“Yes, she did.” Adam’s voice cut in.
Interview with Author K.M. Warfield
What inspired you to come up with the idea for your book?
Do you have a favorite scene? If so, what was it? In this one, there’s a couple. One that really stands out for me is about halfway through the book. And it’s more of a couple of chapters vs. a single scene. There’s a whole sequence of events that culminate in a rather major reveal, so I can’t say more without spoiling it!
When you’re not writing, what are you up to?
Working. I do have a 40 hour a week job, but the environment’s pretty awesome. We play D&D with friends every other week. Football season is about to start (Go Hawks!). I play with my cat, hang out with my husband, and try and puzzle what comes next writing wise.
Any tips to share with someone who wants to be published?
Be patient. Be polite. No one without name recognition gets treated like Stephen King out of the gate. Honestly, the truly successful authors aren’t divas demanding perks. They’re actually nice people who happen to have a cool job.
Do you have a favorite writing environment?
I have a small office at home. The walls are covered with art and pictures that inspire me. There’s shelves and things on just about every surface that have meaning to me. It’s got this energy to it…. One that thrives on creating instead of chaos, gives me hope instead of despair (I have a trifecta – anxiety, depression, and PTSD), and reminds me of who I truly am. What I’m more than capable of doing. This is my refuge and I’m constantly adding to it, rearranging things so there’s more space to display things.
Do you have a favorite book (out of the ones you’ve written)?
‘Sword and Soul’, which is the 3rd book in this series. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve opened the file to check something for continuity within the world and found myself sucked into reading it. I wrote it. I know what happens. Yet I read it like I’m not that familiar with it. And I smile, because I’m proud of what I did. Even if no one else reads it, I know it’s good.
What’s your writing routine?
What routine? LOL. I’m a pantser, for one. I have an idea of the start, know kinda where I want a story to end up at, and then let the characters decide if we make a left or right turn. Life also has a way of throwing curve balls my way. I have a 40 hour a week job…have to sleep…need to pay bills/run errands….and sometimes I barely have enough energy to do anything beyond sit on the couch and play games on my table.
When I am writing…. it’s absolutely invigorating. I’ll get my playlist going, shut the doors to my office (okay, not all the way. The cats will yowl if I do), put my fingers on the keyboard and close my eyes. I let my hands figure out the words to match the images in my head. Time will stand still…. I can be like that for two or three hours and barely pause to take a drink of water. When I’m done, though, I’m on a creative high that’s the most intoxicating sensation.
What’s on your “bucket list?”
Go back to Scotland (spent a week there in 2018). Recently got to cross a trip to Salem, Mass, off my list. I want to travel, have experiences, visit museums, try new foods or adventures. One of my trip rules is to never eat at a place I can eat at here at home. Which means no Starbucks, I’ll try a local coffee house instead. And, yes, I had haggis (with neeps and tatties) in Scotland! I also spent the night in a restored 14th century castle!
One thing I’ve always wanted to do was have a table at a major con. Happy to say that I’ll have space at Geek Girl Con in Seattle this coming November! I love meeting readers, connecting with people, talking with them about my books. To have a con contact me or my publisher about me being a guest author would be amazing!
Print or e-books–do you have a preference?
Print, but ebooks are amazing when I’m traveling! I grew up where vacation prep included a trip to a book store. We’d pick 2-4 books each to read in the car. I’d rather bring a Kindle with hundreds of books over a tote bag I have to lug in and out of the car!
