GENRE: Fantasy Romance
Book Description:
Exiled from Faerie when her father dies, half-Fae Ember is surprised by how much the human realm has changed since she was there last. She takes a dangerous job on a merchant airship, hoping a life on the move will keep her well-hidden. Sure, she misses her brother, but years of apathy have numbed her emotions.
Book Excerpt:
I scanned the crowd, but there was no sign of them. My stomach lurched, and I swallowed my panic. I moved as quickly as I could to the place where Reilley had just stood.
To the right was a dim alley with curtained doors lining the sides. I shot into the shady street.
“Reilley?” I called and received no answer.
Up ahead, a curtain covered the light that spilled into the alley. I rushed for that doorway. Ripping open the curtain, I lunged inside.
In the small room, two men sat on crates playing cards on a box in between them. They looked up as I entered.
“Where is he?”
Neither responded as they returned to their game. I spotted a door at the back of the room and barreled toward it. The two men moved to stop me.
“I don’t have time for this,” I told them as they blocked my way.
The one closest to the door I wanted to get through crossed his thick arms over his chest and lifted his chin, looking down at me with a smirk. His wirier friend stepped toward me and pointed the way I’d come.
“This party is closed,” he said with a heavy accent. “If you don’t have an invitation, leave.”
“I just need to get my friend. Then, I’ll leave.”
He shook his head and grabbed my upper arm to escort me out. “You will leave now.”
I rotated my elbow and broke his grip then pulled back and drove the heel of my hand into his nose.
When the optimistic and naïve Reilley follows her, it’s annoying to say the least. But when she starts feeling responsible for him, long-stifled emotions crack the ice around her heart.
Faeries, pirates, and traveling players meet in this steampunk fantasy adventure as Ember tries to cope with feelings long forgotten and a past that pursues her.
Author Interview with D. Lieber
Is there a character you’d trade places with? If so, why?
Not really. I’m kind of mean to my characters.
How would you describe a perfect hero/heroine?
My perfect hero/heroine is a flawed one. Lucky for me, most of them are. A hero/heroine is a person or character who inspires people to overcome their personal challenges. I want to see my hero/heroine fail but keep trying. I don’t make the journey easy for my characters because life isn’t easy.
Do you have a favorite writing environment?
One that is quiet. I can’t write with distractions. Even noise-cancelling headphones aren’t enough. Ideally, I would also turn off my phone, but I fear how my family would respond if they couldn’t reach me.
How do you go about choosing the names for your characters?
It depends on the character. Sometimes, I choose a name based off the character’s nationality and the meaning of the name. Sometimes, I use a random name generator until I find a name I like. I also have a list of names I come across that I like.
What other books have you written?
My debut novel is entitled Conjuring Zephyr. It’s also a fantasy romance: In a subterranean society where women are thought incapable of practicing higher forms of magic, one woman disguises herself as a man and infiltrates an all-male university. Determined to debunk established magical principles, Kai Stephenson finds concentrating on her quest difficult when her new friends awaken her sexuality.
I also have a paranormal romance, Intended Bondmates, scheduled to release June 21, 2018:
No one said guarding a faeling from bloodthirsty vampires would be easy. In fact, Runa trained all her life to protect her intended bondmate, Konner, until he could awaken his full magic.
She was looking forward to her time with the young fae until tragedy shattered her plans. For the last thirteen years, she’s been bound with Mikhail, her best friend’s intended bondmate. Neither of them was happy with the arrangement, but she never thought he’d request to unbind from her early.
When all hope of Runa fulfilling her rite and joining werewolf society is threatened, Konner comes through and agrees to become her bondmate.
Thinking her life has changed for the better, Runa eagerly rushes to Konner’s side. But Konner hasn’t forgiven her for abandoning him. And Rowan, bound with Konner’s brother, is hostile toward the fellow werewolf that left him to protect two faelings alone
What would be a must-have for a romantic date?
I’m a low-maintenance date. I don’t care if we go to the park, a baseball game, or a high-class restaurant, though I will say I’m more comfortable at more average places. I will be happy as long as I am laughing and I have the guy’s attention.
Print or e-books–do you have a preference?
I prefer the feel of a real book. I used to want a Beauty and the Beast-worthy library, until I started moving around. It took me three moves before I learned to downsize and appreciate e-books.
Author Bio and Links:
D. writes stories she wants to read. Her love of the worlds of fiction led her to earn a Bachelor’s in English from Wright State University.
When she isn’t reading or writing, she’s probably hiking, crafting, watching anime, Korean television, Bollywood, or old movies. She may also be getting her geek on while planning her next steampunk cosplay with friends.
She lives in Wisconsin with her husband (John), retired guide dog (Samwise), and cat (Yin).
